What notes are on a C chromatic harmonica?
A standard 12-hole C chromatic harmonica uses solo tuning. Without the slide, the blow notes are mainly C, E, G and C. The draw notes are D, F, A and B. When you press the slide button, each note is raised by one semitone, giving you the missing sharps and flats.
This is why a C chromatic harmonica can play melodies in many keys, even though the instrument is named in C.
The basic solo tuning pattern
Solo tuning is useful for beginners because the same logic repeats across several octaves. The first four holes form one complete block, then the block starts again higher.
- Holes 1 to 4 form the first note block.
- Holes 5 to 8 repeat the same pattern one octave higher.
- Holes 9 to 12 repeat it again in the upper range.
- The slide button turns each note into its chromatic neighbour.

How to read the chart
Choose the hole number first, then choose the action: blow, draw, blow with slide, or draw with slide. For example, hole 1 blow is C, hole 1 draw is D, hole 1 blow with slide is C# / Db, and hole 1 draw with slide is D# / Eb.
Beginners should first learn the natural notes without the slide. Then add the slide notes gradually to understand the full chromatic scale.
Why some notes repeat
Some notes appear in more than one place on the harmonica. This is normal and useful. It lets the player choose a more comfortable breath pattern, prepare a phrase, avoid running out of air or make a melody easier to play.
- The same note may exist with or without the slide depending on the hole.
- The hole choice changes breathing comfort and phrasing.
- Beginners should learn one simple route before using alternate positions.
